Scouting notes: Top247 five-star OT Josh Petty (Georgia Tech commit)

Weekly rankings notes: Top247 scouting intel in multiple classes, several new 2025 ratings (2)

Georgia Tech landed ahistoric commitment Monday from Josh Petty, a 2025 Top247 five-star prospect as the No. 2 offensive tackle in the senior class. Here's an excerpt from my recently updated evaluation of the Roswell (Ga.) Fellowship Christian standout:

High-level offensive tackle prospect with outstanding functional athleticism fostered by impressive two-way snaps. Legitimately 6-5 with tackle length thanks to confirmed arm and wing numbers. Lean with ample frame space for adding mass. Quicker off the ball on offense than defense, but flashes surprising linear closing speed in pursuit. Georgia 2A state champion wrestler in 285-pound weight class as a sophom*ore before finishing as state runner-up as a junior in Feb. 2024. Wrestling prowess translates in body control and hand-to-hand combat strength. Can get punchier, but plays angry and finishes blocks. Mean streak is obvious. Motivated drive blocker who also climbs to second level with relative ease. Very young for the 2025 cycle.

Scouting notes: 2027 Top100 four-star QB Elijah Haven

Weekly rankings notes: Top247 scouting intel in multiple classes, several new 2025 ratings (3)

247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins provides a closer look at Baton Rouge (La.) Dunham's Elijah Haven, who debuted Wednesday at No. 1 overall in 247Sports' initial Top 100 for the 2027 recruiting cycle:

Supersized dual-threat quarterback with a powerful arm and above-the-rim athleticism. Far from polished at this stage, but together an extremely encouraging 9th-grade campaign, posting an 8-3 record as a first-year starter with green numbers in key statistical areas: 67.7 completion percentage, an average of 12.25 yards per attempt, and a 11.6 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Release isn't always the cleanest, but can make a variety of different throws and from a variety of different platforms. Ability to avoid pressure and buy himself chances certainly separates him from some of his peers as he has proven to be a smooth mover in the pocket with a promising internal clock. More than capable of moving the chains on designed runs, especially with a 6-foot-4 frame that's pushing 210 pounds, but keeps defenses honest with his shots to the second and third levels. Must keep evolving, but should be viewed as a potential multi-year starter at the Power Four level with an extremely high ceiling given the clay.

Scouting notes: 2027 Top100 four-star edge rusher DJ Jacobs

Roswell (Ga.) Blessed Trinity Catholic's DJ Jacobs debuted at No. 3 overall in the initial Top 100 for 2027. Here's a closer look at his game in the first 247Sports scouting report on Jacobs, from Ivins:

Smash-mouth edge player with a strapping frame that plays the run just as good as he does the pass. Measured just over 6-foot-5, 215 pounds following a freshman season in which he racked up 81 tackles and six sacks while facing well-respected competition in Georgia. Should eventually be able to carry 250 pounds or more, which could allow him to kick inside and find work as a situational rusher at some point during his career. Wins more times than not with an explosive up-field burst and is the type of defender that's going to capitalize on the opportunities he creates as he almost always finishes with authority. Flashes some heavy hands for his age, which in turns allows him to get off blocks and charge the cleat line, frequently making stops in pursuit. Could improve the flexibility a little bit, but that would be nitpicking a promising youngster. Projects as a future difference-maker on Saturdays that can be a true pest for opposing offenses.

Scouting notes: 2026 Top247 four-star OT Kodi Greene (Oregon commit)

Weekly rankings notes: Top247 scouting intel in multiple classes, several new 2025 ratings (4)

Oregonlanded a commitment this week from elite 2026 offensive tackle Kodi Greene, who established himself at Sammamish (Wash.) Eastside Catholic in 2023 before moving in the offseason to Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei. National analyst Greg Biggins provides a closer look at the 2026 Top247's No. 28 overall prospect:

Greene is a massive tackle prospect who's pushing 6-6, 290 pounds with an 80" wingspan. He made the move to Mater Dei in the off-season it will be fun to watch him compete against that tough national schedule. There's no doubt Greene is one of the top lineman in the national '26 class with a very high ceiling. He has a rare combination of physicality in the run game and can maul an opposing edge or linebacker plus the athleticism and finesse to take on speed rushers in pass protection.

Scouting notes: Top247 four-star WR Shamarius Peterkin (Virginia Tech commit)

Weekly rankings notes: Top247 scouting intel in multiple classes, several new 2025 ratings (5)

Virginia Tech picked up a valuable addition to the Hokies' 2025 recruiting class earlier Friday, when Winston-Salem (N.C.) Mount Tabor Top247 four-star receiver Shamarius Peterkin announced for VT. Ranked No. 208 overall in the senior class, Peterkin brings playmaking ability aided by a background in basketball and high jump.

Tall, lean outside receiver verified at 6-foot-2 who's played all three phases and several positions. Long-striding gait that fosters more initial acceleration than expected. Tracks the deep ball well and makes impressive hands catches in the vertical game. Basketball player who shows go-get-it red-zone effectiveness and matchup-winning consistency in contested situations thanks to athleticism and timing. Big-play threat in the return game, including longs of 99 (kick) and 77 (punt) for touchdowns as a junior. Production increases significantly year-over-year entering senior season. High jumped 5-10 as a freshman and also plays basketball, displaying open-floor finishing ability above the rim. — Brooks

Scouting notes: Mike Tyler, 2025 TE (announcing Saturday)

Weekly rankings notes: Top247 scouting intel in multiple classes, several new 2025 ratings (6)

Columbia (S.C.) Hammond tight end Mike Tyler is expected to make a commitment decision Saturday. West Virginia, Duke, NC Stateand LSU got official visits from Tyler, while the Tigers lead the 247Sports Crystal Ball as of Friday afternoon. Here's an excerpt from my updated scouting report on Tyler:

Playmaking flex tight end candidate who provides an explosive perimeter presence as a dominant high school wideout who also aligns in the slot and from an H-back alignment. Dangerous run-after-catch threat with acceleration, run strength, and good functional top-end speed. Gets on top of high school defensive backs quickly and can flash run-by speed in the vertical game. Willing to work the middle of the field and go up in traffic in various situations. Plays hard, and physical nature as a blocker and a RAC threat reflect that. Still a work in progress on blocking technique, such as hand placement consistency, but appears to suffer no lack of effort.

New rating: Harry Hassman, 2025 WR

Harry Hassmann debuted this week on 247Sports with a strong three-star 86 rating and the potential to continue his rise if he keeps doing what he's done in the past calendar year. As a junior at New Braunfels (Texas) Canyon, Hassmann caught almost 60 passes for nearly 1,000 yards and 15 touchdowns on 16.5 yards per reception. After moving to Coppell (Texas), Hassmann ran a season-best 100-meter time of 10.90 seconds, while also running for Coppell's Texas 6A state-qualifying 4x100 relay.

Still, Hassmann remained under our radar until late June at theTexas 7on7 Championships, where he dominated as a multi-level playmaker with downfield tracking and go-get-it ability, accompanied by athletic run-after-catch athleticism. The junior tape reflects those qualities, and Hassman should be primed for a monster senior season catching passes from Baylor QB commit Edward Griffin.

Hassmann may be one of TXHSFB's top uncommitted senior skill players. His double-digit Division I offers includeJames Madison, UAB, Ball State, and Central Michigan.— Brooks

New rating: Jaylon Hawkins, 2025 WR (San Diego State commit)

One is hard-pressed to find faster 400-meter times in the football recruiting sphere than the one Argyle (Texas) Liberty Christian's Jaylon Hawkins ripped this past spring. His 47.51-second 400 accompanied strong times in the 100- and 200-meter events (11.05 and 21.71 seconds, respectively).

That straight-line speed showed in pads in the fall of 2023, when Hawkins linear acceleration and top-end gear boosted big-play frequency, as evidenced by nine touchdown catches in 23 receptions.

Hawkins, who committed in late June to San Diego State, debuted this week on 247Sports with a strong three-star 86 rating. His potential as a big-play receiver joins special teams value as a return option. — Brooks

New rating: Ervin Smith, 2025 IOL (Louisiana Tech commit)

Credit to Louisiana Tech for a savvy in-state offensive line take in Ervin Smith, who likely projects to center and owns in-game experience snapping the ball and playing right tackle. Across the past two springs, Smith has eclipsed the 47-foot shot put mark a handful of times, and that sudden power shows on the field, where Smith serves as a line-of-scrimmage enforcer for perennial power Catholic High in Baton Rouge.

Smith, owner of a new three-star 84 rating on 247Sports, moves very well as a puller and brings conviction to the second level as a climber.

Smith'sjunior tape and multi-sport context remindme of Oklahoma 2024 wrestling signee Jacob Henry, the son of wrestling and strongman legend Mark Henry and recent WWE NIL signee.— Brooks

New rating: Seth Carethers, 2025 CB (Wake Forest commit)

Cornerback Seth Carethers committedthis week to Wake Forest to mark the fifth FBS commitment so far in the 2025 cycle for Coppell (Texas) High.

In Carethers, Wake Forest gets a competitive cover man who's consistently disruptive at the catch point and not afraid to use his hands at the line of scrimmage, in addition to a 200-meter participant with a 23.10-second time this past spring.

Carethers, who debuts with a three-star 84 rating and potential to rise, does a good job at crowding the catch window at multiple levels and displays the functional speed in pads to turn and run with skill players in Class 6A, Texas' highest classification.— Brooks
