"To Machines, I'm Just Not There": Wolverine Officially Brings Back the Superpower Even Hardcore Fans Forgot He Ever Had (2024)

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Wolverine: Deep Cut #2!Wolverine has no shortage of mutant abilities that make him one of the most formidable superheroes in the Marvel Universe. From a near god-tier healing factor and heightened animalistic senses, to six retractable claws laced with unbreakable adamantium that extend from his fists. And now, X-Men is bringing back a lesser-known ability that even the most hardcore Wolverine fans have completely forgotten about.

In a preview for Wolverine: Deep Cut #2 by Chris Claremont and Edgar Salazar, Logan is sneaking into one of Mr. Sinister’s secret lairs, as he’s working to uncover a conspiracy involving mutant cloning and attempted murder. While Wolverine runs into one of Sinister’s Marauders, Blockbuster, he handles the villain like it's nothing, and continues on his mission to uncover this sinister plot.

After initially infiltrating with ease and successfully sneaking into the lower levels of the facility, Wolverine carries an unmistakable air of confidence in his covert skills. Not because of his Weapon X training or mutant powers, but because of one decidedly weird thing: he’s technically dead. And because he’s dead, anyone who sees Wolverine quickly forgets his face, and “to machines, I’m just not there”.

Marvel Reminds Fans that Wolverine & the X-Men had Special ‘Dead’ Powers

Uncanny X-Men #227 by Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri

Wolverine: Deep Cut picks up where an older X-Men storyline was left forgotten. In Uncanny X-Men #227, the X-Men sacrifice their lives to save the planet in a storyline called “The Fall of Mutants”. Roma - the daughter of Merlyn from Otherworld and former Guardian of the Omniverse - was so impressed by their heroism, that she used her immense cosmic power to bring them back to life. However, there was a catch to their resurrection: anyone who sees them quickly forgets them, and they are invisible to cameras and all other electronic scanning.

This was an interesting development for the X-Men, as they were still going on adventures, they were just technically dead while they did so, with the aforementioned ‘powers’ added to each of their mutations. However, it didn’t take long for Marvel to unceremoniously drop this plot point. That is, until now, as Chris Claremont is bringing fans back in time to the era where the X-Men are dead, and are invisible to cameras - and he’s doing so with Wolverine.

Wolverine: Madripoor Knights by Chris Claremont and Edgar Salazar

The ‘Dead X-Men’ era that came after Claremont’s “The Fall of Mutants” isn’t the only older storyline the acclaimed X-Men writer is currently revisiting. Wolverine: Madripoor Knights is another one that is an immediate follow-up to one of Claremont’s earlier comics, Uncanny X-Men #268. That storyline was left unfinished as well, until Claremont came back to flesh it out with Madripoor Knights. And now, fans are seeing the same thing with Deep Cut, as they’re getting further exploration into a time when Wolverine and the X-Men were dead, and they had powers that reflected that.

The storyline of Wolverine: Deep Cut is already an exciting one, with Wolverine embarking on a covert-ops mission to take down Mr. Sinister after brutally fighting a clone of Sabretooth to the death in the first issue. However, the most unarguably interesting part of this series is the fact that it is bringing back powers given to Wolverine and the X-Men that not even the most hardcore fans remember.
