As part of the initiative, they will feature in the jukebox production, Dream On: A Poppins Tale of Joseph, which will be staged at the Playhouse Theatre this weekend. The YPP, which started in 2001, seeks to create opportunities for young performers to work on stage productions alongside professional artists by presenting an annual musical. Some of the productions they have staged over the years include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (2023), Footloose (2017), School of Rock SA (2008) and Grease (2003). Daily News|2024-07-03New Cabinet filled with too many old and useless fossilsHere we go again. Same old fossils in the government. Old politicians like Gwede Mantashe, Angie Motshekga, Aaron Motsoaledi and others. There is very little to be excited about when looking at the ANC’s “honourable” ministers when many were named in the Zondo Commission. So we will once again watch them sleeping in Parliament, because these old politicians need their rest after working hard in the fields for the “people”, right?. Wake up, Cyril, and bring in people who can really look after the people of South Africa. | MARCEL Angie Motshekga was a failure as Minister of Basic Education. I am surprised that now she is appointed by President Ramaphosa as Minister of Defence and Military Veterans. What does she know about the defence of the country? Does…2 min
Daily News|2024-07-03DA reminds Lesufi they voted for his re-election as premier of GautengFormer DA MP Douglas Gibson has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to crack the whip on Premier Panyaza Lesufi as he appears to push ahead with unreasonable portfolio allocations in the Gauteng provincial government. Gibson was responding to a question about whether the Gauteng squabbles over positions impact the national government’s decision on portfolios. “I don’t think it will do that. The national government has set a tone and I am quite sure that if Mr Lesufi is unreasonable the DA won’t agree with him and if he is unreasonable, President Ramaphosa will take out the whip,” he said. The announcement of Lesufi’s provincial cabinet was postponed for a second time on Monday night after provincial leaders were instructed by Luthuli House to postpone the announcement of the provincial cabinet.…2 min
Daily News|2024-07-03Zikalala ‘demotion’ part of ANC-DA deal – analystPolitical analyst Professor Sipho Seepe said the deployment of Dean MacPherson as the new minister of Public Works and the redeployment of Sihle Zikalala as deputy minister was not a case of demoting the latter, but rather part of the deal struck between the DA and the ANC. This was after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced his Cabinet on Sunday. Seepe emphasised that part of the deal required the ANC to give up some ministerial positions and Zikalala was, unfortunately, a part of that. “The deal also meant that Zikalala had to give up his position so that the ANC could invite other smaller parties like the UDM and PA to work within their quantum of six that they can rightfully lay claim to,” Seepe said. He said a negative perception…2 min

The MEC visited the home yesterday after allegations of child abuse surfaced recently. There have been claims that a group of children living at the home had suffered at the hands of their care workers. Shinga announced a series of measures that the Department of Social Development would implement in response to these allegations. Accompanied by senior officials from the department, including the accounting officer, Nelisiwe Vilakazi, Shinga announced the appointment of a team of investigators to uncover what happened at the home. Mthabela said that as times change, gender roles should not be a stumbling block in building relationships and raising families. Mthabela and other celebrities including Thembinkosi Mthembu, Khuzani Mpungose, and J Something are part of the #QinaNdoda by OMO campaign to address these traditional stereotypes. The actor said the relevance of traditional gender roles should be questioned. He said these days, gender roles were difficult to hold on to in practice when both men and women had to work, which was why it was important to lay a foundation of love and understanding. He said that in a situation in which a man had a job that allowed him to arrive home earlier, rather than…1 min
Daily News|2024-07-03Jozi residents to pay through ears with prepaid levySOUTH Africans have spent the past five years suffering through life amid the high cost of living. If it is not rocketing food prices, it is the fuel prices. If it’s not load shedding, it is the increase in electricity tariffs. In Joburg, the situation is about to get worse with an intended recurring R200 monthly fee to be charged against prepaid electricity users. According to the City of Joburg, only customers registered as indigent (earning below R6 000 a month) will be exempt from this new levy, said to help cover the infrastructure component of the service. If this development is true, it will continue to eat into the pockets of struggling and poor South Africans. I am not sure the City of Joburg has consulted its residents to…2 min

Daily News|2024-07-03Rudy Giuliani loses New York law licenceWASHINGTON: Rudy Giuliani lost his New York law licence yesterday, after a state appeals court found he had lied in arguing that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from his client, Republican former US President Donald Trump. The court found that Giuliani, the former New York mayor who served as personal lawyer to Trump, “baselessly attacked and undermined the integrity of this country’s electoral process”. Giuliani was one of the leading proponents of false claims that Trump’s defeat to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020 was the result of widespread voter fraud. | Reuters…1 min
Daily News|2024-07-03Etzebeth, Boks desperate for win against IrelandThe Springbok hourglass is not nearly close to running out for hardman Eben Etzebeth, but the lock is cherishing every Test he plays a little bit more because it’s one closer to eventually calling time. As a more senior statesman now, with 120 caps behind his name, the 32-year-old feels the pressure is also getting a bit heavier because he understands more what it means to play for South Africa, but judging from his workhorse performances week in and out, one wouldn’t say that he feels any pressure. On Saturday, in the first Test against Ireland at Loftus Versfeld (5.05pm start) Etzebeth will again play a crucial role as the Boks bid for a first win over the Irish since 2016. The Cape Town-born enforcer will also take one step…2 min

The 31-year-old, the youngest full-time manager in Premier League history, has taken over at the south coast club after guiding St Pauli to promotion to Germany’s elite Bundesliga last season. The Texas-born German coach said he had moved to “the best league in the world”. “I’m aware this is a huge job. It’s a big challenge and I think I need a lot of courage and ability so I need to stay humble,” said Hurzeler. “My targets, I want to discuss them with my players, they need to be convinced of that, they need to feel what we can achieve, that’s the main thing for me. Daily News|2024-07-03Defensive solidity the saving grace for Les BleusFrance have struggled to score goals at Euro 2024 and they owe their qualification for the quarter-finals to a miserly defence that has left all their opponents frustrated. Les Bleus have yet to find the back of the net in open play, having reached the last eight after a Kylian Mbappe penalty and two own goals – the latest by Jan Vertonghen in their 1-0 victory over Belgium in the round of 16 on Monday. Didier Deschamps’ side, however, have conceded only once, a penalty in a 1-1 draw against Poland in the group phase. France have been far from their usual flamboyant selves, a shadow of the team who scored nine goals on their way to the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals and seven in four games in 2018. In…2 min
Daily News|2024-07-03Sekhukhune’s choice of coach smacks of desperationDESPERATE times do indeed call for desperate measures. That perhaps best describes Sekhukhune United’s choice of coach for the coming season. Babina Noko announced Germany’s Peter Hyballa as the man to lead their team for the 2024/2025 campaign after they parted ways with Lehlohonolo Seema late last season. The choice, however, smacks of desperation after the club’s failure to secure initial targets Morena Ramoreboli and Fernando da Cruz. Sekhukhune had been in advanced negotiations with Ramoreboli only for ‘the Orlando Pirates slayer’ to opt to rather seek the renewal of his contract at Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy, where he won the league title in successive seasons. On the other hand, Da Cruz – the 51-year-old Frenchman – chose to join Kaizer Chiefs as an assistant coach to Nasreddine Nabi, whom Amakhosi…3 min

It was inevitable with the army of parties in the GNU, that President Ramaphosa was going to dish out political pork left, right and centre. This is clear in his increasing the number of ministers and the ludicrous deputy minister posts. Which country globally has more deputy ministers than ministers? Whose policy in a GNU such as this is going to prevail? Is this government going to follow ANC policy, as it is just nonsensical that you can have consensual policies – based on so-called 'sufficient consensus’, which is yet another ruse because it means the more powerful in this stew make the decisions – from this army of parties? For example with regard to economic policy is the ANC going to…7 min

In a statement issued by Numsa’s secretary-general, Irvin Jim, the union yesterday said Ford had “made a fortune” over the past four years globally, and could “definitely afford some kind of bonus”. Daily News|2024-07-03Forget politics – this is how we can revive economic growthThe formation of a new coalition government marks the start of a new chapter for South Africa. But even as political parties jostle for power, the reality is that no matter who leads us forward, there is only one real solution to re-energising socio-economic growth and development: industrialisation. And this, in turn, hinges on making informed, pragmatic energy decisions, and sustainable infrastructure development. These are the fundamentals that are ultimately needed to stimulate investment, grow businesses and accelerate employment. But instead, by neglecting these pillars, South Africa’s economy has faltered and stagnated for decades, entrenching poverty, inequality, and unemployment. So, as we look ahead to the next five years, we must not allow ourselves to become distracted by politics – these are the three real metrics that should be used…4 min
Daily News|2024-07-03Clashes in Kenya capitalProtesters clashed with police in Kenya’s capital Nairobi yesterday and some were arrested, as calls for peaceful anti-government rallies descended into scattered incidents of violence and looting following last month’s deadly demonstrations. Activists have stepped up their campaign against President William Ruto despite his decision last week to withdraw a controversial finance bill that triggered what he has branded “treasonous” protests by young Gen-Z Kenyans. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) said on Monday that 39 people had been killed and 361 injured during two weeks of demonstrations, with the worst violence occurring last Tuesday, and condemned the use of force against protesters as “excessive and disproportionate”. By yesterday afternoon, Nairobi’s central business district, the focus of previous rallies, saw scattered confrontations between police lobbing tear gas and…3 min

Daily News|2024-07-03Rassie banking on experienceThe Springboks do not harbour any thoughts of revenge or feel they have a score to settle against Ireland on Saturday in Pretoria. Yes, they haven’t beaten the Irish since 2016, but since then the Boks won back-to-back World Cups and that, at the end of the day, is what currently distinguishes the world champions from the second-ranked rugby nation. The enormity of the occasion on Saturday was emphasised by head coach Rassie Erasmus selecting his strongest available team for the first of two Tests at Loftus Versfeld (kick-off 5.05 pm), with 20 of the matchday squad being 2023 World Cup winners, including the entire starting 15. They boast a collective 966 caps between them – the second most experienced Bok 23-man squad named after the one that did duty…3 min

With both Bafana and The Black Mambas finishing on five points and on the same goal difference, Mozambique qualified by virtue of having scored more goals in the tournament than Bafana. Daily News|2024-07-03Little room for experimentation as the Springboks front up to IrishAlthough there’s a rebuilding phase in the Springbok set-up looking at the 2027 Rugby World Cup, the respect the world champions have for Ireland was clear to see with the strong side coach Rassie Erasmus selected for Saturday’s first Test in Pretoria. A Bok side with 20 World Cup winners and 966 Test caps between them will look to get a first win since 2016 over the Irish. Here, Leighton Koopman looks at key things learnt from Erasmus’ team announcement. Experience holds the key While Erasmus knows that blooding the junior players is the key to eventually striking gold at the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, the immediate need is to build more winning momentum after the first victory of the year a couple of weeks ago against Wales.…3 min
Daily News|2024-07-03SA draw big lessons from Test defeatThe limited time spent playing red-ball cricket and the irregularity of Test- match cricket was the difference between South Africa pushing India all the way and falling short, as they did on the final day of the one-off Test match, losing by 10 wickets at the weekend. The Proteas Women are battered and bruised after the defeat in India, having put up a brave fight against a strong Indian side in testing conditions. Their lack of experience cost them the small margins, but they gained valuable lessons. There has been enough in the past few results to suggest that with more game time the Proteas Women could become a force in the red-ball format, the heavy defeat against Australia earlier in the year notwithstanding. The draw against England in 2022,…3 min

He said the ANC has done a poor job of grooming young leaders because people like Angie Motshekga should be retired by now and she has already served in the Cabinet for a very long time. “We need to be producing younger leaders who will take the country forward,” said Ndlovu. However, he was impressed by the appointment of the 40-year-old Ronald Lamola as Minister of International Relations. In the founding provisions of the Constitution, 11 languages were recognised as official languages, with South African Sign Languages recognised on July 19, 2023. The recognition of 12 languages is to move away from apartheid’s bilingualism in which Afrikaans and English were the only official languages except in the Bantustans, where indigenous African languages were regionally recognised as the languages of each TBVC state.
